Dumpster Divers and Pests

When I was out running errands this morning, I heard a rustling in the trash can next to the sidewalk. Pretty soon, out popped an opportunistic dumpster diver. Hey--no tourists equal no treats, so he figured out real quickly that he could get in and out of the trash can pretty easily. Plus, it HAS to be warmer and dryer in there!!

And this is literally a drive-by shooting (although I WISH it had been with a gun!). These are part of the local herd of elk who prefer the yards in our neighborhood. Yes, they are majestic; yes, it is exciting to see them--IF they are in someone else's yard! I had to grab this quickly as I slowed the car down and hoped I didn't slide off the road. Sorry about the quality...moving car and early morning overcast light don't make for a good exposure combo.

  1. What a cute squirrel. We don't have much wildlife running around here in the burbs. The snow on the can has a lot of detail!

  2. I know those elk drive you buts, but you are right, they are majestic. Instead of the (new-ish) law about driving while holding a cell phone, maybe there ought to be one for "drive-by" shooting as well?!?

Love that you caught that little squirrel too!

  3. That squirrel cracked me up, there is one that comes by every afternoon JUST to torture my dog.

  4. Are elf related to monkeys? They have the weirdest butts. ;)

  5. I'm not particularly fond of deer, either, given what they do to lots of people and their vehicles. Your photos are beautiful anyway. Your neighborhood needs an "Elk whisperer!"

  7. Love your wildlife shots. We have wild turkeys in our not so wild neighborhood. A few started feeding them and now they have been here for several years. ~Jackie

  10. I know the elk drive you crazy, but I love when you post photos of them. I'm definitely in the 'squirrels are pests' camp, though.
Thank you so much for your kind words, Pat. :-)

  11. I love all of them, but I really adore the squirrel. Sooo cute! We have one climbing a tree to our apartment window everyday to get a slice of bread from me. They are amazingly tame creatures!
